Groundwater 101: The Athabasca Oil Sands region

The Cumulative Environmental Management Association commissioned Uncover Editorial + Design, Susan Milley Illustration and DPI Territorial to provide a plain-language, illustrated overview of groundwater in northern Alberta and potential interactions with industry.

In it we describe the fundamentals of groundwater in a basin system, how aquifers function in the Athabasca Oil Sands region, the relationships between surface and groundwater, and potential consequences of extracting groundwater without proper monitoring. The potential effects of lower water levels and poor water quality on the harvest of traditional resources could have far-reaching consequences on the health, culture, and social and economic well-being of First Nations and Metis communities.
